Autumn reaches Chengde from the north. The first cold front of October strips the poplars along the lake, herons lift off the water at first light, and the ginkgo behind the palace turns a yellow so bright it looks lit from inside. Stand on the low bridge below the Misty Rain Tower and you hear a caretaker sweeping leaves, and almost nothing else.
Chengde Mountain Resort is the Qing dynasty’s summer palace, built between 1703 and 1792 about 350 kilometres northeast of Beijing, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. It is 49 minutes from Beijing by high-speed train. At jusha.travel, we love sharing tips that turn a famous name into a place you can actually walk. This guide covers what the resort is, how to reach it, when the autumn colour peaks, what tickets cost in October 2026, and a one-day route built around the shorter winter hours.
What is the Chengde Mountain Resort?

Chengde Mountain Resort is a 611.2-hectare imperial palace-and-garden complex in Chengde, Hebei Province, built as the Qing court’s summer capital between 1703 and 1792 and inscribed by UNESCO World Heritage Centre in 1994 together with twelve outlying temples. Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong came each summer and autumn to escape Beijing’s heat, settle frontier policy and receive Mongolian and Tibetan envoys before riding north to the Mulan hunting grounds.
UNESCO credits the property under criteria (ii) and (iv): Chinese architecture folded into a natural landscape, and the last flowering of imperial China. On the ground that means scale: not one palace but a walled landscape of lakes, pasture and forest, traditionally counted as 72 vistas.
How do you get to Chengde from Beijing?
High-speed trains run from Beijing Chaoyang to Chengde South in as little as 49 minutes, with about 113 services a day and second-class seats from roughly CNY 95 (China Daily, 17 June 2026). Chengde South is about 10 kilometres from Lizheng Gate, and a taxi covers that last leg in 20 to 30 minutes.
Check which Beijing station your ticket names. City buses 69 and K2 also link the station with the old town.
| Option | Journey time | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-speed rail, Beijing Chaoyang to Chengde South | 49 to 80 minutes | From CNY 95 second class | Day trips and independent travellers |
| Coach from Beijing | About 4 hours | About CNY 85 | Tight budgets with heavy bags |
| Self-drive on the G45 expressway | 2.5 to 3 hours | Tolls plus fuel | Families adding the Great Wall |
When is the best time to visit for autumn colour?

Mid to late October is the best window for autumn at Chengde Mountain Resort: National Day crowds have gone, the air turns dry and clear, and broadleaf trees shift from green to gold while the pines stay dark. Mornings need a jacket; afternoons are mild.
Timing matters more than usual this year. From 10 October the resort runs autumn-winter hours, opening Lizheng Gate at 08:00, stopping ticket sales at 16:30 and closing entry at 16:40 (the Chengde municipal news portal, 10 October 2026). Peak pricing runs to 31 October, so late October gives you autumn light at summer prices and a shorter day to work with.
| Period | Conditions | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late September to 7 October | Warm, mostly green with early gold | Very heavy in National Day week | Colour starting, holiday crowds |
| 8 to 31 October | Crisp, clear, frosty mornings | Light on weekdays | Best balance of colour and quiet |
| November | Cold, bare branches, possible snow | Very light | Temples and empty lakesides |
| April to May | Windy, blossoms, dust storms | Moderate | Gardens yes, photography no |
What are the Outer Eight Temples?

The Outer Eight Temples are twelve Tibetan, Mongol and Han-style Buddhist temples built on the hills north and east of the resort between 1713 and 1780, inscribed as part of the same UNESCO property. The name is administrative: eight answered to the Qing bureau for frontier affairs, but twelve were built.
Putuo Zongcheng is the one to prioritise. Built between 1767 and 1771 as a reduced copy of Lhasa’s Potala Palace, it covers about 220,000 square metres and is best seen from the ridge road, where its red terrace floats above the treeline. Puning Temple, completed in 1755 on the plan of Samye Monastery, shelters a 22.28-metre wooden Guanyin carved from five kinds of timber (Wikipedia, 2026).
What do tickets and opening hours cost in October 2026?

A peak-season ticket to Chengde Mountain Resort costs CNY 130 per adult, includes the palace museum and stays valid for one entry within two days until 31 October 2026, when the winter rate of CNY 90 starts (Chengde Mountain Resort price board, 2026). Half price is CNY 65 for students and visitors aged 60 to 69.
Book online before you travel: entry is by real-name reservation with a passport scan, and the ticket office is a bad place to learn your booking failed.
| Ticket | What it covers | Until 31 Oct 2026 | From 1 Nov 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain Resort | Palace, museum, lakes, plains, hills | CNY 130 | CNY 90 |
| Potala and palace temples | Putuo Zongcheng and Xumi Fushou | CNY 80 | CNY 60 |
| Qingchui Peak area | Forest park, Pule and Anyuan temples | CNY 50 | CNY 50 |
| Mountain shuttle, optional | Hop-on loop through the hill zone | Around CNY 60 | Around CNY 60 |
Which zone should you see first?
The four zones run south to north in a line, palace then lake then plain then mountain, so the efficient route enters at Lizheng Gate and leaves by Dehui Gate without doubling back. Allow five to six hours if you want the ridge as well as the water.
Palace Area

The Palace Area is the walled southern quarter where the Qing court governed, centred on the Hall of Frugality and Placidity, built from nanmu wood without a single nail. The emperor’s bedchamber sits behind it and the museum holds court dress, clocks and edicts. Forty-five minutes is enough if you read the labels.
Lake Area

The Lake Area is a Jiangnan water garden rebuilt on the northern frontier, with causeways, islands and pavilions arranged to look borrowed from Hangzhou. The Misty Rain Tower is the postcard view, the Jinshan Pavilion gives the widest angle, and the Rehe Spring feeds the lakes from a source that stays cold all year. Photographs work best before 10:00.
Plain Area

The Plain Area is open grassland where emperors staged horse races and banquets for visiting leaders, and it still feels like parkland rather than palace. Deer graze between the pines, the Wanshu Garden lawn is the easiest place to sit, and the Wenjin Pavilion once stored a copy of the Siku Quanshu.
Mountain Area

The Mountain Area covers roughly four-fifths of the resort, which is why almost everyone buys the shuttle ticket. The loop stops at Ermadao, where the city wall gives a straight sightline to the golden roofs of Putuo Zongcheng, and at Simian Yunshan, the highest point in the park.
A one-day route that actually works

This route assumes a late-October visit on the winter timetable, when entry closes at 16:40, and runs with the light.
- 08:00 Enter at Lizheng Gate, show your passport and cross the Palace Area before the tour groups arrive.
- 08:45 Loop the Misty Rain Tower and Jinshan Pavilion while the lake is still calm.
- 10:15 Take the mountain shuttle to Ermadao for the view over Putuo Zongcheng’s golden roofs.
- 11:00 Continue to Simian Yunshan and walk the short ridge path.
- 12:30 Come down to the Plain Area, sit on the Wanshu Garden lawn and eat what you brought.
- 13:30 Walk the western causeways back through the lake zone, quieter in the afternoon.
- 15:30 Exit at Dehui Gate and walk 15 minutes to Shuangqiao for an early dinner.
Practical tips for foreign visitors
- Carry your passport: it is the only document that works for the real-name gate scan.
- Book through the official mini-programme or a trusted agent, and screenshot the confirmation.
- Wear shoes with grip; the ridge paths are real stone trails, not promenades.
- Bring layers. October mornings near the hills sit close to freezing.
- Carry water and snacks; food inside the walls is limited and expensive.
Where to eat and sleep outside the gates
Shuangqiao District, the grid of streets south of Lizheng Gate, is where Chengde actually lives. Breakfast is lamb soup with shaobing, lunch is buckwheat noodles, and the night market on Shanzhuang Road fills after 18:00. Hotels near the gate run from clean budget rooms to restored courtyard guesthouses, and one night is the difference between rushing the resort and reading it. Our guide to hiking the Jinshanling Great Wall slots in neatly on the return leg.
Is Chengde worth the trip?
Chengde Mountain Resort rewards travellers who treat it as a landscape rather than a checklist. The palace is modest beside the Forbidden City and the lakes are smaller than West Lake, and neither comparison matters once you are alone on the ridge road with golden roofs below you and the hills turning gold. What justifies the 49-minute train ride is the combination: imperial politics, Tibetan architecture and northern autumn in one walled valley that few foreign visitors reach.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to visit Chengde Mountain Resort?
Most visitors need five to six hours to cover the palace, lake, plain and mountain zones of Chengde Mountain Resort, including the shuttle loop. A rushed version hits the palace and lake in three hours.
Is Chengde Mountain Resort worth visiting from Beijing?
Chengde Mountain Resort is worth a day trip from Beijing because high-speed trains cover the distance in as little as 49 minutes for about CNY 95. The resort opens at 08:00 in late October, so an early train still leaves five hours inside the walls.
Can you see the resort and the Outer Eight Temples in one day?
One day is not enough for both the resort and the Outer Eight Temples, which charge separate tickets. Plan the resort first and Putuo Zongcheng or Puning Temple for the next morning, since the CNY 80 temple ticket stays valid for two days.
What is the best month for autumn colours at Chengde?
Mid to late October is the best period for autumn colour at Chengde, when the air is clear, nights turn frosty and the broadleaf trees shift to gold. The first week of October is the worst choice despite the foliage, because National Day crowds fill the lake causeways.
Do you need a reservation to enter Chengde Mountain Resort?
Yes, entry requires a real-name reservation booked online, with a passport scan at the gate for foreign visitors. In peak season same-day slots can sell out by mid-morning.
How much do the Outer Eight Temples cost?
