Zhagana: The Stone Box Valley of Gannan’s Tibetan Farms
Morning arrives slowly in Zhagana. Mist fills the valley floor, then the sun clears the eastern ridge and finds the barley racks, the chimney smoke and the grey limestone towers standing over the villages like the walls of a keep.
Zhagana, Gannan, is a Tibetan farming valley in Diebu County, Gansu, where four villages sit at roughly 3,000 m inside a ring of cliffs that give the place its Tibetan name: the stone box. The valley is still worked — barley terraces, yaks, smoke-blackened timber — and carries both a UN Food and Agriculture Organization heritage listing and a UNWTO Best Tourism Village title. There is no station in Diebu, so you come by train to Minxian and three hours of mountain road.
At jusha.travel, we love sharing tips that turn a good trip into a memorable one, so this guide stays practical: what a stone box is, which village to sleep in, what entry costs and how to get here.
Why Zhagana, Gannan, is worth the long approach
Zhagana is the rare Chinese valley where a working farm system, an international heritage listing and a walkable village landscape overlap. The FAO recognised its agro-pastoral-forestry system as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2017, with the certificate presented in Rome in April 2018 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 19 April 2018). In October 2023 the UNWTO added Zhagana to its Best Tourism Villages list in Samarkand (China Daily, 19 October 2023).
The pull shows in the numbers: 1.86 million visitors in 2023, 2.15 million in the first seven months of 2026, more than 8,000 guesthouse beds, and average stays that have stretched from 1.2 days to 2.5–3 days (China Economic Net, 7 September 2026).
Where is Zhagana, and what exactly is a stone box?

Zhagana is a cluster of four Tibetan villages in Yiwa Town, Diebu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, about 30 km and forty minutes by road from the county town. The villages occupy an old glacial valley at 2,900–3,300 m, walled in by limestone that rises past 4,000 m, with spruce, barley terraces and the Yiwu River threading the middle.
The name is Tibetan for stone box, and the skyline explains it: rock towers close the valley on three sides. Joseph Rock reached Diebu in June 1925 and wrote that if the author of Genesis had seen it, he would have placed Adam and Eve there — now shortened to the Garden of Eden.
Which of Zhagana’s four villages should you sleep in?

Sleep in Dari if you came for the dawn, Dongwa for convenience, Yeri for barley terraces at the window and Daiba for dark skies. The four settlements stack up one road, so the choice is a trade between comfort, view and quiet.
| Village | Height | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dongwa | c. 2,900 m | Buses, food, easy first night | Busiest village |
| Yeri | c. 2,950 m | Barley terraces, quiet lanes | Longer walk to views |
| Dari | c. 3,000–3,100 m | Sunrise and mist | Few rooms with a view |
| Daiba | Highest | Stars, fewest people | Thin food options |
What can you see in a day and a half?

A day and a half covers the Dari viewpoint, Lasang Monastery, the Fairy Beach boardwalk and one forest valley, which is the realistic core of the valley without a guide.
Dari viewpoint is the highest lookout the road reaches, and the classic shot of mist under the villages is taken here before 07:30. Rock viewpoint faces the great cliff and takes the last warm light. Lasang Monastery, a small Gelug house above Dongwa that local accounts date back about 300 years, asks for covered shoulders and a quiet voice.
Fairy Beach is an alpine meadow reached by boardwalk in about an hour, with the Fairy Lake tarn an hour beyond. Runwu Valley is quieter: a stream, spruce and stone. Since April 2026 the county has closed the gorge routes past the boardwalks, Yixiantian and Laohuzui among them, and Diebu and Zhuoni now ban all undeveloped ground in the scenic area (Diebu County Government, 22 April 2026). Ask at the gate which paths are open today.
When is the best time to visit Zhagana?

Late September to late October is the best window, when the barley is cut and hanging, the larches turn, coaches thin out after the National Day holiday and the first snow usually stays on the high ridges without closing the road.
| Season | Conditions | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jun–Aug | 15–20 °C, wildflowers, storms | Heaviest | Lush but wet |
| Late Sep–Oct | Golden barley, clear light | Light after 7 Oct | Best overall |
| Nov–Mar | Below freezing, some inns shut | Very few | Snow, check roads |
| Apr–May | Thaw, muddy trails | Light | Quiet but brown |
October in Diebu averages 7.7 °C, with highs near 15.7 °C, lows of 2.7 °C and 46.7 mm of rain, according to 1981–2010 normals from the China Meteorological Data Service (Wikipedia, Diebu County). Pack for a 15 °C swing between noon and midnight.
How much does Zhagana cost, and how do you book?
Entry costs 80 CNY for adults and covers three days of multiple entries, with the internal shuttle a separate 40 CNY for a day pass.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult entry | 80 CNY | 3 days, re-entry allowed |
| Students, 60–64 | 40 CNY | Photo ID required |
| 65+, under 1.2 m | Free | Documents required |
| Shuttle day pass | 40 CNY | Unlimited hops, optional |
Booking runs through the scenic area’s WeChat account, not a ticket window — there is none on site, and unbooked visitors are turned back. In 2026 the peak-season timed slots ran from 1 May to 7 October, with booking three days ahead between 15 July and 7 October and a daily cap of 6,000. Drivers register a plate and park at the Dongwa lot before switching to the shuttle (Sina Travel, 27 September 2026).
How do you get to Zhagana from Lanzhou?

Zhagana has no station of its own, so the practical route is a two-hour train to Minxian, three hours of road to Diebu and forty minutes up the valley. It can be done in one day.
- Take a C or D train from Lanzhou to Minxian on the Lanzhou–Chongqing line: C692 runs 07:09–09:00 with second class at 46 CNY (Ctrip schedules, October 2026).
- Cover the 150 km from Minxian to Diebu by bus or hired car, about three hours of climbing road.
- Or take a direct coach from Lanzhou South Bus Station, six to seven hours, or come from Hezuo, three hours by bus.
- From Diebu the valley is 28–30 km, forty minutes by taxi. The local bus leaves at 07:00 and 12:00 and returns from Dongwa at 16:00.
- Book before the gate and keep the QR code offline; signal is patchy.
- Allow the afternoon to adjust: Lanzhou sits near 1,500 m, the villages at 3,000 m.
With a spare morning, eat first: our guide to why Lanzhou’s beef noodles are a culinary legend explains the ritual.
What does late October look like on the ground?
Late October in Zhagana is barley-rack season: the crop hangs in A-frame frames roughly four metres tall in every courtyard, the larch turns gold, and the coaches vanish once the holiday ends. Farmers cut barley in the rainy weeks of late summer and dry it on those racks to keep it ventilated and out of reach of cattle (People’s Daily, 18 December 2020).
Expect cold mornings, warm midday sun and a fair chance of the first snow dusting the 4,000 m ridges while the valley floor stays clear. Trails are firm, light is low, rooms soften in price. The terraces are private crofts, so stay on the paths.
Practical tips for a first visit
- Stay two nights. One for arrival and sunset, one for the dawn.
- Carry cash. Around 500 CNY covers tea, horses and drivers when signal fails.
- Layer up: base, fleece, windproof shell, hat and gloves for the 06:00 viewpoint.
- Slow down on day one. The scenic area company offers free oxygen at the gate.
- Pack snacks; village shops are thin and close early outside summer.
- Ask first. People, monks and prayer halls deserve a question, and prayer wheels turn clockwise.
Is Zhagana worth two nights?
Two nights is the right length, because the valley rewards the second morning: the mist behaves differently, and you stop photographing long enough to sit down.
It is also a valley in fast motion. Village income has risen from 4,500 CNY per person in 2014 to more than 100,000 CNY in 2025, close to 90 percent of it from tourism (China Economic Net, 7 September 2026). Two nights, meals in the village and a local guide is the version of this trip worth taking.
